Senior Day win keeps postseason hopes alive for women's soccer

It was the underclassmen who made sure of the win on Senior Day. Juniors Nicole Doran and Kelly McConnell were the goalscorers in the women's soccer team's 2-0 victory over Seton Hall after seniors Rebecca Capinera, Brittany Cavarra and Jacklyn James were honored in a ceremony before the game.

Oct. 11, 2008 The Red Storm women's volleyball team continued to prove they are still the class of the Big East conference last night by sweeping Rutgers (25-20, 25-11, 25-13) in dominating fashion for their fourth conference win of the season. With the win, the Red Storm moved to 4-1 in Big East play - with a 13-7 overall record - and maintained their position atop the conference standings, while keeping Rutgers winless in the conference.

The Red Storm basketball Tip-Off celebration on Sept. 25 indeed had the feel of an NBA All-Star weekend. The 1,200 St. John's students and fans in attendance were formally introduced to the Red Storm's 2008-09 men's and women's basketball teams in Taffner Field House.

Women's golf finishes second at ECAC match

The Red Storm women's golf team took home their best finish of the fall this past weekend at the two-round Eastern College Athletic Conference championship, finishing in second place (39-over 615). "Overall, our team has been playing very well," head coach Ambry Bishop-LaRosa said.

Though the St. John's women's soccer team has had its difficulties scoring goals, it certainly has faith in the player stopping them. Since stepping in for then-injured Rebecca Capinera before the season opener against Fairfield, freshman goalkeeper Kristin Russell has been the saving grace for a team that's only scored two goals all year.

Before every half of every game, Neal Kitson kisses his gloves and taps the goalposts. It's a ritual the St. John's senior goalkeeper has kept up since he was 14. But manning the goal line has become a far more intoxicating ritual than his embrace with the metal uprights at either end of the pitch.
