Sophomore Ale Ivo scored his first goal of the season and Neal Kitson posted his fourth shutout as the No. 11 St. John's soccer team won its home opener against Boston University, 1-0, at Belson Stadium Friday night.
The St. John's women's soccer team not only had to battle the dreary weather last night at Belson Stadium, but also a Columbia team out to prove themselves a worthy local rival.
It was an unsuccessful weekend for the St. John's women's volleyball team. They dropped both games of the Ameritas Players Challenge to the New Mexico Lobos and Louisiana State Tigers respectively.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Russell's flawless replacement of injured senior Rebecca Capinera came to an end in the 83rd minute against Yale.
The St. John's volleyball team had an impressive outing Tuesday night, traveling into the Bronx and sweeping the Fordham Rams in straight sets 25-18, 25-22 and 25-17.
The streak is still alive. No. 22 St. John's men's soccer team posted its third straight shutout to open the season with a 1-0 win over No. 12 Brown University on Friday night in the adidas-Brown Soccer Classic. The Red Storm has not opened the season with three consecutive shutouts since 1999, a year they reached the Round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.
The box score from the St. John's men's soccer team's opening game against No. 18 Virginia would probably worry most fans. The Red Storm were out-shot 17-7 and ended up finishing the game with 18 fouls, which included four players receiving yellow cards.
After opening the season with two shutout wins in the Virginia Soccer Classic, the Red Storm already has some hardware to show for their work. Junior forward Adam Himeno was named Big East Offensive Player of the Week and Storm goalie Neal Kitson took home Goalkeeper of the Week honors.
The St. John's volleyball team was able to salvage the third match of their west coast trip with a 3-1 win over San Jose State at the Cal Molten Classic. After dropping the season opener to No. 5 California Golden Bears, and their second match to UC Santa Barbara, the ladies in red needed a bounce-back match and they got it.
Add a tournament title to the growing list of 2008 women's soccer accomplishments. The Red Storm defeated the Delaware Blue Hens 1-0 Sunday afternoon, in the Blue Hen's Classic Championship. After defeating a tough Towson team two days before their match with Delaware, the Red Storm remained perfect en route to their hardware.
