Since 2004, the St. John's men's soccer team has started each season in dramatic fashion and Adam Himeno made sure that this year would be no different. In the opening round of the Virginia Soccer Classic, Himeno scored the winner, off a pass from sophomore Tafadzwa Chiduku to lift the Red Storm to a 1-0 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers.
One goal was all the St. John's women's soccer team needed Friday night in Delaware. The Red Storm defeated the Towson Tigers in the first round of the Blue Hen Classic 1-0. The score remained tied at zero for much of the game, until St. John's freshman forward Jen Leaverton scored her first career goal in the 77th minute of play.
St. John's University's is at the center of the fencing world. Coached by the same man who leads the Red Storm onto the strip, Yury Gelman, the United States men's team won a silver medal in team sabre at the Olympics in Beijing. It was the U.S.'s first medal in the sport since 1984.
Last year's volleyball season was one to remember, but a loss in the third round of the NCAA tournament has this year's team hungry for improvement. After posting a dominant 33-4 record last season, the Johnnies have huge spaces to fill near the net with the departure of last years Big East Player of the Year Hui Ping Huang.
In their opening game of the 2008 season the St. John's women's soccer team controlled the Fairfield Stags for the full 90 minutes, beating them 1-0 last Friday night. Although they only managed one goal, the Red Storm dominated the Stags, who are expected to compete for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship, in every category.
When last school year came to a close, it marked the beginning of a fresh start for the Red Storm men's basketball team. After a very hectic off-season, where both junior Larry Wright (Oakland University) and sophomore Michael Cavataio (Holy Cross University) announced they wouldn't be returning for the upcoming year, the team needed to have a productive summer.
