With two minutes left on the clock at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday, the home sideline was already jumping around and raising their sticks in the air, sensing their first victory of the season. With a four-goal lead, all the St. John's lacrosse team had to do was survive a final array of Penn State shots before carrying the ball into the Nittany Lions' territory to run out the rest of the clock.
St. John's University has added Carnesecca Arena to its summer to-do list. The athletic complex is set to receive $5 million worth of interior renovations this summer, Director of Athletics Chris Monasch announced on April 8. The changes to the former Alumni Hall will include a brand new playing surface, the addition of 800 chairback seats and a revamped lobby with new ticketing areas.
All Kia Wright has wanted since she was a young player in Copiague, N.Y. was to play professional basketball. But an injury-plagued junior year of college almost turned that desire into a just a dream or, worse, a distant memory. When the WNBA Draft came and went last week without Wright's name being called, it seemed those fears were confirmed.
The team is struggling, but there is hope. The St. John's softball team has lost 13 of their last 15 contests and currently stand with a 2-12 conference record. But amidst the team's difficulties, it's been two freshmen who have given fans hope - if not for this season, then certainly for ones to come.
In the series finale against UConn last Sunday, No. 22 St. John's managed to squeeze out a 1-0 win thanks to the outstanding pitching of Jared Yecker, Colin Lynch and Miguel Valcarcel. Yecker picked up his third win of the season for the Red Storm (25-8, 9-3 Big East) and struck out six batters in the process.
The St. John's softball team didn't fare well during their travels north this weekend. In fact, they got swept in doubleheaders against both UConn and Providence. The Red Storm played Connecticut tough in game one on Saturday, however a blown late-game lead meant a dramatic 6-5 Huskies victory.
The men's and women's tennis teams will both travel south to Tampa, Fla. to take part in the Big East tennis tournament set to begin tomorrow. The men's team is heading into the tournament playing well having won five of their last seven games, with two of the wins coming against Big East rivals Connecticut and Villanova.
