How is the relationship between students and professors changing now that more professors are logging on to Facebook?

Social networking sites, such as Facebook and Myspace, are slowly changing the dynamic between students and professors. According to Alexa Internet, Inc., a Web site that provides information on web traffic, Facebook.com has 64 million active users worldwide.

S.E.R.V.I.C.E. sweeps elections

The ballots are in and Dana Lezama, with 55 percent of the vote, is the newly-elected President of Student Government, Inc. In fact, Lezama's entire S.E.R.V.I.C.E. ticket swept the elections. A remarkable 1,277 students voted in this year's election, which were held on March 17-18- more than double last year's turnout of 633.

A "Good" walk for the homeless: SJU raises money

Members of the St. John's community spent their Good Friday participating in the University's annual Walk for the Homeless. More than 340 people took part in this year's event, the largest total ever in the walk's history, according to Angela Seegel, campus minister.

New website pays students to post notes online

Several college juniors from Washington University launched a new Web site, Schoology.com, which helps make studying and understanding classroom material easier. Founder of the Web site, Jeremy Friedman, and a few of his friends, Timothy Trinidad, Greg Mervine, and Ryan Hwang, introduced this site last month as a helpful tool for students to share notes.

A look into Modernist art during the reign of Adolf Hitler

St. John's English professor, Dr. Gregory Maertz, presented his discovery of lost Modernist art from Nazi-era Germany on March 25 at the Institute for Writing Studies. The event, titled "Art in the Third Reich," featured a slideshow, lecture from Maertz, and a question-and-answer session.

SJU pays tribute to long-time professor

Faculty, administrators, and students paid tribute to Dr. John. W. Dobbins Jr., chairman and associate professor of Marketing in Tobin College of Business. Dobbins died on March 19 from long-term cancer. A funeral mass was held on Monday March 24 at 11 a.

Group created to help environment

The University has recently decided to take a significant part in the battle to save the planet with the creation of a new environmental group on campus, called the St. John's Sustainability Initiative (SJSI). The group will work with administration, staff, faculty, and students and will provide them knowledge, skills, and motivation, to help them incorporate sustainability responsibilities into the construction of new facilities and the operation of already-existing facilities, said Thomas Goldsmith, director of Energy and Environmental Conservation.

MTA fare hikes have students concerned

The recent Metropolitan Transit Authority fare hike has hit many St. John's students where it hurts - in the pocketbook. Commuters make up about 80 percent of the student population. "I work," said freshman commuter Leneli Liggayu, "and to pull another $5 out of my paycheck is hard.
