SJU celebrates Latino Heritage

St. John's recently hosted its annual Latino Heritage Week, which ran from September 21-27. The event was organized by the Office of Campus Activities, the Office of Mulitcultural Affairs, and the Latin Heritage Committee. Latino Heritage Week began with a barbecue in the Residence Village, and was followed by an opening party at the UC Commons.

New computer degree available

Former NYPD lieutenant John Otero is heading a new program at SJU.

A new bachelor's program in Computer Security, led by former NYPD Lieutenant John Otero, was unveiled this September by the College of Professional Studies. The program, which will enable students to learn how to prevent cyber-crime, is the first of its kind being offered in the New York metropolitan region, according to a university press release.

Edu. professor shares research in Beijing

The compilation of two years of surveys, data, and interviews from the Non-Public School Leaders program and New York City Department of Education, Del Vecchio's research points out the (crisis in education) due to attrition-the fact that older principals are leaving and that there are not enough young and qualified people to replace them.

Social Justice Conference to be held

St. John's will hold a conference in October to explore ideas of justice and morality.

St. John's University will hold the fifth biennial Vincentian Chair of Social Justice Conference, enttitled "The Just and Moral Society: From Ideal to Reality," at Bent Hall on Saturday, October 13. This one day conference calls together policy makers, faculty, service providers, church leaders and students in order to explore the foundations and criteria of a "Just and Moral Society.

Philosophy professor to study origin of sympathy

Philosophy professor Marie George received a $20,000 research grant recently to study the evolution of sympathy and morality. George was awarded the grant from the Science and Transcendence Advanced Research Series, also known as STARS. STARS is a program run by the Center of Theology and Natural Sciences, located in Berkeley, California.

Emergency notification system sees an increase in numbers

After a student carrying a rifle was apprehended last Wednesday on St. John's Queens campus, the number of students registered for the new text message alert system has risen drastically, according to St. John's media relations. According to Dominic Scianna, the Director of Media Relations, "The number has tripled in the last 24 to 48 hours" since the incident.

Tom Lawrence discusses emergency response

Tom Lawrence, Vice President of St. John's Department of Public Safety, had to act quickly on Wednesday when reports came in regarding a student on campus wearing a mask and carrying a rifle. The torch had the opportunity to sit down with Lawrence the day after the incident to discuss how Public Safety reacted to the near-crisis, what he felt needed to be improved upon, and how big a role the emergency notification service played.

Lawyer, professor speak about Omesh Hiraman

Omesh Hiraman, the 22-year-old St. John's University student accused of carrying a loaded weapon onto campus September 26, was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia, according to his lawyer, Anthony Colleluori. Hiraman was arrested soon after walking onto campus and is facing four charges, including criminal possession of a firearm and failure to register a firearm.

A week after the near crisis, campus life returns to normal

In the wake of last Wednesday's near-crisis on campus, St. John's officials are taking steps to increase security on campus, as well as return the University to a sense of normalcy. There are currently plans to upgrade communication systems around the University.
