St. John's will break ground later this month on the construction of 16 townhouses to be located opposite St. Augustine Hall near the Great Lawn, according to Brij Anand, vice president of Facilities Services. The new student housing will assist in adding 450 beds to the University's ever-growing housing shortage.
Students have already begun taking sides over the controversial issue of whether or not a performance of "The Vagina Monologues" should be allowed on campus. Senior Alisha Brizicky first presented her desire to have a production of the play at St. John's in September, but administrators would not allow the play to be produced as a student activity, claiming it is too controversial.
Many upperclassmen who want to live on campus next fall may have to change their plans, according to Dominic Petruzzelli, director of Residence Life. "Next year we are planning to make a paradigm shift between our on-campus and off-campus students," Petruzzelli said.
As increasing numbers of people are relying on the Web to stay updated on the news, weather, sports and entertainment, St. John's University has realized the possibility that newspapers will some day become an outdated media source. The recent rise of other mass media forms, including blogs and webcasts has led professors to create a new curriculum for the journalism department.
The thirteenth annual St. John's University Founder's Week begins Thursday with the Founder's Week Mass in St. Thomas More Church, running through Feb. 1. The week, first held in 1995, was designed to "promote and celebrate the University's Vincentian heritage," and to commemorate St.
The Sullivan Café, opened at the beginning of the fall semester in the sub-basement of Sullivan Hall, recently underwent several renovations. "The Café originally opened in September before it was completed," explained Ken Waldhof, the director of Auxiliary Services, "but due to the construction process it was determined it was best to close the Café and reopen when it was completely built out and ready to provide its full array of services.
New desks Students may have already seen the new red chairs decorating St. John and Marillac Halls. Over the winter break, 3,500 chairs were replaced in these two academic buildings to accomodate students' needs to fit a laptop and notebook on their desks.
